De naam ‘Machrie Moor’ is geinspireerd door een oude legende. Het eiland Arran, voor de westkust van Schotland, heeft vele steencirkels en menhirs uit het Neolithicum en de vroege bronstijd. De mooiste collectie van een cirkel is te vinden op Machrie Moor, op het westen van het eiland. De hele heide is bezaaid met de overblijfselen van de vroege mens, van hut cirkels om Chambered Cairns en eenzame staande stenen.
Op Machrie is de dubbele cirkel, de Suide Choir Fhionn of Fingal’s Cauldron Seat, vernoemd naar de legendarische krijger en reus Fingal, welke waarschijnlijk is afgeleid van de Ierse Warrior God Finn MacCumhail. De Arran Distillery wil zijn nieuwe whisky vergelijken met Fingal; robuust en ruig, net als het glooiende Schotse landschap en zijn inwoners zijn!

Arran Machrie Moor (46%, OB 2011, 9000 btl.)
Nose: Smells young but really interesting. Grass, sweet malt, yeast, toast, vanilla and chocolate notes at the start. Gets fruitier after a while with citrus (lemon, lime and grapefruit) and artificial (but delicious) apple, pear and summer fruit notes. After a little more time some more savoury notes start to come through subtly with earthy, smoky bacon and peat ember notes topped off with BBQ and smoked hickory.
Palate: A big sweet hit at first then gets gradually bitter and drying like dark chocolate. Quite spicy as well until the finish which has a slightly cooling effect with a bitter liquorice taste. There is a very subtle earthiness throughout with a modest peat level.
Finish: The peat reek takes centre stage leaving a rich, warming glow like the burning embers of a bonfire. Master Distiller James MacTaggart has skillfully combined all of the elements at work to create a harmonious blend of malt, peat and cask.
An appealing if slightly simple whisky with a fantastic nose. The low (non-Islay) peat level lends itself well to the whisky.

Na ongeveer honderdvijftig jaar bezit het eiland Arran weer een distilleerderij. Vroeger, tot de jaren '30 van de negentiende eeuw, stonden er in het zuiden drie distilleerderijen. De Isle of Arran-distilleerderij werd in 1995 gebouwd door Harold Currie. Het was altijd al zijn droom een eigen maltwhisky-distilleerderij te bezitten. Harold was geen vreemde in de whisky-industrie. Hij was namelijk directeur bij Chivas en House of Campbell. Het is een grote investering om een maltwhisky-distilleerderij op te zetten omdat de new spirit tenminste drie jaar moet rijpen op eikenhouten vaten voor hij verkocht mag worden als whisky. Het is dan ook niet vreemd dat Harold Currie het eiland Arran heeft gekozen. Dit is namelijk het meest toeristische eiland van alle Schotse eilanden, en om in de eerste drie jaar toch inkomsten te verkrijgen bouwde hij bij zijn distilleerderij een groot restaurant en een winkel. Daar kan de toerist na een betaald bezoek aan de distilleerderij alles kopen waar de naam van de distilleerderij op staat, en sinds 1999 ook de single malt die in de distilleerderij geproduceerd wordt. De eerste productie was op 29 juni 1995. De eerste whisky was dan ook net 4 jaar oud. Men kan een of meer vaten reserveren en betalen, en deze na jaren rijping, al of niet gebotteld, afhalen bij de distilleerderij.
