Glenglassaugh 41 year old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the product from a single cask which has matured at our distillery on the Moray Firth coast for over 40 years. The cask was a refill sherry hogshead and whisky which has been bottled at the cask strength of 44.6% and has been bottled with no chill-filtration and no colouring.

The aroma is of rich fruit and oak with a complex taste of chocolate, marmalade and coffee and a long firm finish.

It comes in a cut crystal decanter engraved with the Glenglassaugh logo and if desired this decanter can be engraved with your name at no extra charge. It is packaged in a satin lined rosewood box with a pair of cut crystal glasses which can again be engraved with a set of initials at no extra charge. The box is engraved with our logo.

This whisky won gold medal (best in class) and a special trophy celebrating the 40th anniversary of the IWSC for “Best 40 Year Old Scotch Whisky” at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2009. It was awarded 96 points in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2010 and rated category winner for 35-40 year old single malt scotch whiskies and it won a gold medal at the recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Glenglassaugh 41 yo (44.6%, OB, decanter, 2009)
Colour: deep amber.
Nose: very fragrant, starting on precious wood, raisins and hints of camphor, all that working in sync. Pretty perfect! Goes on with hints of metal polish and damp earth and then many cooked and dried tropical fruits (not fresh). Papayas, pineapples, longans… Gets finally much more leathery and ‘tertiary’, with hints of beef jerky and parsley, even a bit of garlic. Pine resin. A very, very complex old Glenglassaugh! Beautiful.
Mouth: a very rich oakiness at first sipping, but an elegant one. A lot of bitter chocolate, various fruit jellies and jams (strawberries first), some vanilla, various herbal teas (rosehip, chamomile, lime tree blossom), and a wide combination of spices including cloves, cardamom, black pepper, carvi and cinnamon (lots). Develops on loads of dark chocolate and coffee beans plus notes of cough syrup. Very ‘torrefied’.
Finish: long, spicy, quite tannic but not excessively so. Quite some oranges in the aftertaste.

Comments: a 41yo that’s still rather nervous and ‘vibrant’. Excellent and, above all, not too oaky. I like it better than the 30yo – am I normal? SGP:561 - 92 points.

De Glenglassaugh distilleerderij werd in 1986 gesloten. De distilleerderij werd in 2008 gekocht door de Scaent Groupe. Deze maatschappij stak ongeveer 1 miljoen pond in de renovatie en herstart van de productie. Er staan nu 6 washbacks – 4 houten en 2 van roestvrij staal – bij Glenglassaugh. De nieuwe spirit wordt opgeslagen in een mix van refill- en Amerikaanse ex wijnvaten uit de Napa Vallley. De eerste tekenen wijzen op een raw spirit met een fruitig karakter met een body tussen licht en halfzwaar, behoorlijk zacht, iets zoetig en fijne kruidige tonen in de afdronk. Er komen nu regelmatig bottelingen van de oude voorraad op de markt. De malt van Glenglassaugh werd hoofdzakelijk gebruikt voor het blenden van Famous Grouse, Cutty Sark en Laing's blended whisky's. De maltwhisky van de Glenglassaugh distilleerderij bevat de complexiteit van de Speyside maltwhisky's met de typische lichte zee aroma's van de kust. Vooral de whisky's van voor de sluiting van 1986 worden als de beste whisky's van Schotland gezien. Hopelijk hebben de nieuwe whisky's hetzelfde potentieel.
