  Yoichi 15 jaar

Jim Murray, Whisky Magazine, 13,16/12/2000. 9.25/10. Murray went for the c. 2000 bottling in a big way: "sheer brilliance". He found vanilla predominated in the mouth, with a "fresh, fruity, mouth-watering quality. The finish was long and unctuous, with a little smoke.

Proefnotitie Serge Valentin

Yoichi 15 yo (45%, OB, Nikka)
Yoichi is a great distillery, and it is often said that it can stand up to any Scottish distillery. I don’t know Nikka very well, and all I can say is that I enjoy the small ‘pure malt’ bottles very much (white, red, black).
Colour: light amber.
Nose: very classy, elegant and quite fresh. White fruit, such as melon and peach, all sorts of nuts, nice wood. Some beeswax, Havana tobacco and varnish as well. Really great!
Mouth: rounded, quite oily and rich, but not bold. Dried flowers, aniseed, chocolate, vanilla, cloves, orange and coffee.
Finish: rather long and very balanced.

What a nice whisky! Its spicy notes are very special, and it’s globally very complex and refined. And, above all, it doesn’t mimic a Scotch single malt at all. Recommened. 86 points

The distillery was established in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka. The distillery is currently owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. Ltd, which is owned by Asahi Breweries Ltd.

Yoichi Distillery is located on Japan's Northern island of Hokkaido, 50 kilometres west of Sapporo City, in the Yoichi District of Southern Hokkaido (Lat.43 10'N.Lon.14045'E).

The distillery uses coal-fired pot stills, a method founder Taketsuru learned in Scotland. The use of coal-fired stills is now very rare in Scotland and Yoichi is the only whisky distillery in Japan to employ this traditional technique.

The distillery is open to visitors and self-guided tours can be undertaken. Tours are free and whisky tasting is included. The distillery is located about five minutes walk from the JR Yoichi Station.
