Riise secured his business by sending his son Valdemar (1853–1914) to Denmark when he was just nine years old. Riise wanted his son to receive a suitable education, and Valdemar was later trained both as a pharmacist and in agricultural institutions in Leipzig, Dresden and Paris. In 1878 Valdemar returned to the West Indies, now fully qualified to continue his
career in the most well-stocked pharmacy in the region.
King Haakon VII of Norway started his life as Prince Carl of Denmark. He built up his career in the Royal Danish Navy, which led to him serving on the vessel, Fregatten Jylland. The national treasure “Frigate Jylland” – led the Prince to the Danish West Indies.
