Echt oude grain whisky stond al lang op het verlanglijstje. Naast de Cameronbridge 46 years 1974 - 2021 Single Cask "East" kregen wij ook een cask sample van deze North of Scotland 49 years 1971 - 2021 Single Cask "West" te proeven. Aangezien we niet konden kiezen, hebben we ze allebei aangeschaft en als serie "East vs West" gebotteld onder het Boogieman Import label. 

North of Scotland is opgericht in 1957 door George Chistie en heeft haar deuren voorgoed gesloten in 1980. De distilleerderij is geheel ontmanteld in 1993. 

Binnen de muren van deze graandistilleerderij stond ook een pot still om maltwhisky te kunnen produceren. Deze pot still werd al in 1959 verwijderd.

Proefnotities:

Kleur: Goud bruin.

Geur: Vers geroosterde nootjes. Cappuccino. Duidelijke houtaroma’s. Iedere keer als je het glas naar je neus brengt komt er een andere geur uit het glas. Alsof je oude meubelen in de was aan het zetten bent. Zo complex en oh zo lekker.

Smaak: Ondanks de 49 jaar zeker geen splinters in je tong. Wel subtiel droog in de aanzet. De leeftijd is duidelijk waarneembaar. Eigenlijk komen alle ingrediënten uit een ouderwetse Christmas cake in de smaak naar voren: rozijnen, krentjes, bigarreaux (geglaceerde kersen), geconfijte sinaasappelrasp, nootmuskaat, speculaaskruiden, gehakte amandelen en een hintje maple syrup op het einde. Wij weten al waar we het Kerstdiner mee af gaan sluiten.

Afdronk: Vooral het notige karakter zorgt voor een lange belegen afdronk.

Boogieman Import is the bottler pseudonym of Passion for Whisky, one of the leading whisky shops in The Netherlands. Last week they announced two grain whiskies, a Cameronbridge 1974 and North of Scotland 1971. Even for grain whiskies these are unusually old bottlings.

Nose: slightly more oak polish and very light solventy notes up front. Hints of lamp oil, aniseed, sawdust, ginger and orange marmalade. Hints of vanilla, leather and brown sugar in the background. Closer to American whiskey – and classic grains – than the Cameronbridge.

Mouth: drier with more oak again, leading to white pepper, sawdust as well as a touch of bitterness (cinchona bark). Leather. Hints of baked apple and orange peels, aniseed and hints of pine resin.

Finish: longer than the Cameronbridge, but also drier. Leafy notes, some pepper and over-infused green tea.

A nice nose again, steering of the usual pitfalls of very old grain whiskies. On the palate I feel the wood is taking the upper hand, developing a (relative) astringency that costs a few points.
