Echt oude grain whisky stond al lang op het verlanglijstje. Naast de North of Scotland 49 years 1971 - 2021 Single Cask "West" kregen wij ook een cask sample van deze Cameronbridge 46 years 1974 - 2021 Single Cask "East" te proeven. Aangezien we niet konden kiezen, hebben we ze allebei aangeschaft en als serie "East vs West" gebotteld onder het Boogieman Import label.

Cameronbridge is een distilleerderij die opgericht werd in 1824 door John Haig. Hiermee is deze distilleerderij de oudste nog werkende graandistilleerderij van Schotland. 

Het is niet alleen de oudste, het is ook de distilleerderij met de grootste capaciteit van Schotland. Maar liefst 100 miljoen pure alcohol wordt er binnen de muren van Cameronbridge geproduceerd.

Proefnotities:

Kleur: Fonkelend goud geel.

Geur: De eerste geur die de neus bereikt is tropisch fruit. Drakenfruit, lychee, ananas en passievrucht. Het klassieke oude graanwhiskykarakter is ook duidelijk aanwezig. Later komen ook de kruidige tonen goed tot hun recht. Een zeer veelbelovend entree die we eerder alleen kenden van bijvoorbeeld Benriach en Tomatin 1976.

Smaak: 46 jaar vatrijping heeft ervoor gezorgd dat het alcoholgehalte bijna te laag werd om whisky genoemd te mogen worden. Toch geeft deze 40.1% de whisky kracht en karakter. Het heerlijke fruitaroma is nog steeds op de voorgrond aanwezig. Zwoel zacht, wederom dat fris zoet zure van de ananas, maar ook heerlijk romig en belegen.

Afdronk: Hier verraadt deze whisky pas echt haar leeftijd. In de afdronk komt alles samen. De gelaagdheid, het fruit, het hout, de kruidigheid, hintje honing. Puur genieten!

Boogieman Import is the bottler pseudonym of Passion for Whisky, one of the leading whisky shops in The Netherlands. Last week they announced two grain whiskies, a Cameronbridge 1974 and North of Scotland 1971. Even for grain whiskies these are unusually old bottlings.

Nose: a mix of tropical fruits, like pineapple, tangerine, passion fruit. A little mint. The usual coconut flakes are also present, but further in the background, together with subtle vanilla. After a while the fruits grow sweeter and more candied, with a hint of strawberry and honey. All this kept together by old oak.

Mouth: the age turned the usual woody notes into a certain bright sourness, which evokes more passion fruits and citrus, as well as fresh pineapple and pink grapefruit. Really nice, I can’t think of other grains with this kind of profile. Hints of lemongrass and Thai basil. Subtle juniper and clove in the end.

Finish: not too long. A tad more vanillin and leather now, with a thin fruitiness and hints of fruit tea.

This Cameronbridge lacks the creaminess and obvious vanilla of most other grains. Its thin and subtle profile is really an asset here. Fruity and complex, as well as utterly drinkable. Recommended.
